About Massage Therapy

What does massage do?
In our daily lives when we are subjected to stress from work, traveling, or overexertion, the sympathetic nervous system –“fight or flight”  – is invoked.  The body’s system produces adrenalin, increases heart rate, makes it difficult to process information and muscles tense.  Therapeutic massage assists the parasympathetic system, a.k.a,  “rest & digest” – to help the body’s immune system to cope by training you to relax.  As healthy babies, we have no problems relaxing, it’s only as adults, who are expected to be on the go, working more than 40 hours a week that we forget how to take time for ourselves, even when we have the time, it can seem impossible to slow down.  This is one main reason people find themselves ill.  Massage is preventative in that in receiving, people practice allowing themselves to just be and it becomes easier to slow down and enjoy our lives more fully.

What massage is well-suited for
a. Long-term benefits – Massage can help to train the body to retain a relaxed state, making it possible to walk through life in a balanced state.

b. Companion to medical care – Massage can reduce pain—without costly drugs and their potential side effects, helping the muscles to be more flexible, as well as directly affecting the nervous and immune systems, allowing our bodies to be well.   Massage can also be proactive, alleviating conditions before they affect lifestyle and become long-term problems.

c. Stress reduction – The daily stresses of dealing with work, travel, deadlines and long hours can be alleviated through massage therapy, avoiding the use of often costly prescription drugs and their possible side effects.
